BellBirds - A Poem by Henry Kendall, in the Australian Bush of 1869

BellBirds - A Poem by Henry Kendall, in the Australian Bush of 1869

By channels of coolness the echoes are calling,
And down the dim gorges I hear the creek falling:
It lives in the mountain where moss and the sedges
Touch with their beauty the banks and the ledges.
Through breaks of the cedar and sycamore bowers
Struggles the light that is love to the flowers;
And, softer than slumber, and sweeter than singing,
The notes of the bell-birds are running and ringing.

The Mul - A Visit Back To Mulbring.

You can't hear them in the picture, but the sound as I took this photo really took me back to childhood as the bellbirds sang their glorious chorus. It's 30 years since we lived out here, and it is kind or eerie, how much 'old town' lives, now much of it derelict, alongside some newer places. It's almost as though the new are oblivious to the old town that whispers like a ghost, of times long past.

The old white bridge. One lane only, no passing on the bridge, and the bus would *bounce* all the way across on the way to school, feeling every plank !

This is the street that went from our house to the primary school. We had 28 children in the school on a good day when everyone was present.

This is the old butcher shop across the road from our house at Mulbring. In those days, ( 1965) it was a pretty thriving business, and the butcher was always on the go with his work, and the floors would be covered in sawdust.

Our old house. My brother and I used to eat cocktail frankfurts and watch the wrestling on Saturday's when our parents took the greyhounds to Sydney to race. Bluey would hide under this house, and being the smallest, I'd be deputised to go under and coax him out. I loved Bluey.

Old Leila was a spinster who lived in this house. Eccentric, and she owned the draft horses that my elder sister and her friends in the town all used to ride on at once.

This house marks the corner of our old street

The Wise Woman's Stone

A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream. The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food. The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give
it to him. She did so without hesitation. The traveler left rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime.

But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the
wise woman.

"I've been thinking" he said.
"I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious.

Please give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me this stone."

This is a post I made back in 1999 to someone who was being unkind to herself, after a bad breakup with someone she thought was a soulmate who Done Her Wrong. Funny how things come back to one at the strangest time.

Count On It!

Count On It!
The Reticular Activating System and Hawthorne Effect.

"...In the late 1950s, the GE plant in Hawthorne, California brought in some consultants to measure the effect of brighter lighting on the productivity of their factory workers. The consultants first took productivity measurements to establish a baseline. Then they intensified the brightness of the lighting and measured again.
Productivity increased.

They increased the brightness even more and productivity went up again. After raising the brightness two more times, they saw two more increases in productivity. On a hunch, they lowered the lighting and measured one more time. Productivity went up!

They figured out that the productivity gains were not related to the brightness of the lights, but to the act of measuring. They were paying a lot of attention to the effectiveness of their workers. And guess what? The workers responded by working more effectively.

What do you pay a lot of attention to? What are you constantly measuring, asking your employees about, talking about and looking at?

When your team knows what's truly important to you, they'll likely pay more attention to those things, too."

Bright!

Old Acquaintance

What a strange but not exactly unusual, and definitely welcome thing it has been this week. From time to time I like to catch up with those people whose company I have enjoyed over the years. This week has brought me back into contact with John in Colorado, Jesse in California, Geoff in Calgary, Margaret in Newfoundland, Quentin in Adelaide and Burton in Chicago. Even David in North Carolina and Brendan in Canberra have been back in touch in the past few weeks. And of course, Danielle and Thomas. What a blessing these people are.

I'm proud to have them in my life.

Perceptual Positions in NLP

Perceptual Positions in NLP

Oh what a great find. A site with a good description of perceptual positions. This seems to be an area that many trainers ignore - or perhaps their students just don't realise what an important aspect of personal growth it can be. Either way it surprises me how rarely anyone ever mentions this, in discussions on NLP.

NLP Meta Model Violations

NLP Meta Model Violations

The Meta model and its variations is a continuing theme that seems to raise its head, in discussions with people on the internet boards. Communication is much improved when people have an understanding of the meta model, and when they are themselves commiting 'violations' in their languaging. It is the best place to start - with self - as you learn to also notice it in others, and allow for it in your discussions.

What A Day!

This is going to be a test for writing on this thingamajigey blog. Watch this space! Well this is pretty cool. I managed to get a pic uploaded... not sure how to put it where I want it, but this is a small detail and hopefully I will gain some facility as time goes by.
